Credit History: The Birth of the Air Travel Card
โPutting it on plasticโ has becomeย second nature, but it all started withย airline customers showing their metal.
Beginning in 1936, passengers on Americanย Airlines were the first to โbuy now, payย laterโ using a new concept: the Air Travelย Card. Conceived by the airline and theย Air Transport Association as a moreย convenient way to pay for airfare than byย using cash, the card also rewarded usersย with a 15 percent discount when theyย purchased one-way fares.
The pioneering charge card was soonย honored by 17 airlines in North Americaย for passenger tickets and charges. At anย airlineโs ticket office or at the airportย counter, cardholders handed over a cardย with a metal imprint plate containing theirย account info, signed the receipt for theirย flights and were billed later.
The Air Travel Card quickly rose inย popularity, accounting for about half ofย participating airlinesโ revenues by 1941.ย And although the card was an early wayย for airlines to streamline the passengerย purchasing process, it was the forerunnerย of a massive financial industry.
โItโs bigger than aviation. This is one ofย the precursors to the modern credit card,ย regardless of its intent,โ says F. Robert vanย der Linden, curator of Air Transportationย and Special Purpose Aircraft at theย Smithsonianโs National Air and Spaceย Museum in Washington, DC. The museumย has a vintage Air Travel Card from theย 1950s in its โAmerica by Airโ collection,ย although the card is not currently onย display due to a major renovation of theย gallery, slated for completion in 2022.
The Air Travel Card evolved into theย Universal Air Travel Plan (UATP), a paymentย network owned and operated by the globalย airline industry, which connects airlinesย to one another and their best customers:ย business travelers. The UATP card is nowย accepted by more than 300 merchants, including both airlines and travel agencies.
When that first Air Travel Card wasย issued over 80 years ago, a numberingย system that identifies the issuer of theย card was created. It was adopted by theย industry and is still in use today โ whichย explains why UATP cards, the first ones onย the market, start with the number one.
