Which payment methods are accepted by airline apps?

Jun 13, 2018

As consumers diversify how they pay for things – using everything from debit and credit cards to PayPal and WeChat Pay, airline apps need to broaden their payment offerings.

According to research from videc, which analyzed airline apps on Android devices, payment methods accepted by airline apps vary by market.

The study found 89% of airline apps accept credit cards, while only one in two, or 62%, support debit cards.

Some 35% offer wallet payments such as PayPal, while just one in four airline apps accept payments via Universal Air Travel Plan (UATP).

Just 6% accept storefront payments, which are more prevalent in Asia over anywhere else in the world.

Chinese airlines are the only ones to have integrated WeChat Pay and AliPay so far, but the trend is forecast to rise exponentially as more carriers take advantage of the Chinese outbound opportunity.
